LAND (Libraries and Nylink Deliver) FAQ

Number of packages

There is no limit to the number of packages that can be shipped daily.

Shipping supplies

Nylink will supply each participating member with an initial supply of bags, bag closures, and a label template. Please only use the LAND bags for sending materials to your LAND partners through the LAND system. If your library's supply of LAND bags or bag closures is running low, notify Cindy Hajeck at Nylink by phone at 800-342-3353 or by email and we will replenish your supply as soon as possible.

How to LAND it there

Find your Partner: all participating LAND libraries are listed on the LAND Partners list arranged alphabetically by OCLC symbol and Institution name. Your library can ship to and receive from all the libraries on this list using the LAND program.

Place ILL items to be sent in a LAND bag, zip the bag closed, and secure with a zip tie closure. Multiple items going to one location may be placed in the same bag; however items going to different locations must be placed in separate bags. The courier will not be opening the bags, and therefore will not be able to sort items within the same bag to go to different locations. If you are sending an item that does not fit in a LAND bag, you may send the item in a padded mailer or box. Please label the package as you would a LAND bag.

How do I label the packages?

All the courier requires on the label is the name and city of the originating and destination library. The format of the label is the same as if you are addressing an envelope. Place the destination in the middle of the label with a larger font and your library in smaller print in the upper left hand corner. A label template is available for your use, however pre-cut 3 x 5 index cards will also fit in the windowed envelope.

Here's a template of how the 3"x5" label should look (note the variables to be filled in are in italics)

Lost and Damaged Materials

Additional insurance such as USPS offers is not available, so Nylink recommends that non-replaceable or valuable items not be shipped through LAND. Since materials sent via LAND are not tracked at the item or bag level, it is not possible to determine who lost the item. Nylink claims no liability for loss of or damage to materials shipped through LAND unless it can be specifically proven that the loss or damage was caused by a LAND driver's carelessness or negligence. In accordance with the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States, the borrowing library is responsible for the material from the time it leaves the lending library until it is returned to the lending library. If the book cannot be located, regardless of the cause, then the borrowing library should reimburse the lending library for the cost of the material.

If your library can prove that the materials were lost or damaged due to the LAND courier's carelessness or negligence, the library will be reimbursed up to $100 per item. Reimbursement is limited to replacement costs for the item only, and may not include service or other fees. To make a claim for an item lost or damaged while in possession of the LAND courier, please fill out a missing or damaged item report.

Holidays

There is no LAND service on the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • President's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veteran's Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Library Closures

If your library is going to be closed on a day when you would normally receive a LAND pickup/delivery, please notify Cindy Hajeck at Nylink by phone at 800-342-3353 or by email so that we may let the courier know no stop is necessary. Please provide a minimum of 48 hours advance notice.

Tracking and Reporting Statistics

LAND offers tracking at the library level. Tracking at the item or bag level is not available. Your library will be issued a barcode which should be placed at your designated pickup and delivery location. Your courier is required to scan this barcode at every stop. This allows LAND bags to be tracked as they move through the system. Item level tracking is not available at this time.

Your library should also track LAND usage. All LAND participants are required to count the number of bags and items sent by LAND each month. Please report your LAND usage each month using the online survey.

LAND Participants as Preferred Lenders - Using Custom Holdings

If your library participates in LAND (Libraries and Nylink Deliver), you may wish to create a LAND Custom Holdings Group. Custom Holdings is an OCLC ILL feature that allows you to automatically display holdings for groups of preferred lenders.
