How to Create Digital Collections Using CONTENTdm

Placing the rich and unique resources of our libraries, archives, museums and historical societies on the Web is an exciting and often groundbreaking endeavor, but the process may seem overwhelming and even chaotic. CONTENTdm helps transform digital chaos into managed order. CONTENTdm is a digital collections management application that ingests, describes, indexes and stores pre-digitized files of all types and places them in searchable, self-contained collections for all to see on the World Wide Web. Class participants will work with the latest version of this user-friendly digital collections management application.

The workshop will consist of two scheduled online meetings during which the instructor will demonstrate CONTENTdm and class participants will be encouraged to participate in online chat discussions. Class attendees will do the hands-on exercises on their own.

The time commitment is 2-4 hours per week.

After taking this class you will be able to:

  • Use the CONTENTdm Acquisition Station software to import and describe digital items.
  • Adapt the Dublin Core metadata scheme to meet your institution’s specifications.
  • Set up a template of persistent metadata.
  • Create a two-sided view of a postcard.
  • Build a searchable full-text document.
  • Build a book.
  • Restrict end-user access to sensitive items in a collection.
  • Publish a searchable collection of digital objects on the World Wide Web.
  • Revise/edit an online collection.
  • Better manage your institution’s digitized content.
  • Enhance the visibility of your institution by being digitally available 24/7.
