Out of the Dark and Into the Light: Using Historical Records in the Classroom

New York State is calling for all students to be immersed in historical documents for the social studies. Primary source materials are seen as fundamental to the study of history. Primary source materials can include art works, letter, newspapers, music, photographs, journals, ephemera, etc. Teachers are now looking to replace their reliance on the text book with historical documents and are turning to archives, libraries, museums, historical societies and special collections to provide them with these materials.

In this webinar we will explore the NYS Learning Standards for the Social Studies, discuss how historical documents in your collection can be used to support the standards, review the important Document Based Question (DBQ) and how to connect your collections with teachers.
