Vast technological advancements over the past decade have forced libraries to adapt, by reconsidering — and redefining — their role and constituent services.
This rapidly changing landscape has also necessitated innovative, rather than incremental, responses by libraries with respect to human resources and a variety of other, internal functions. For example, the Cornell University Library in 2005 convened the Library Innovation Implementation Team, whose charge was to “Identify the skills and resources needed for library innovation and continued excellence and [to] develop new competencies by training and recruitment.”
This full-day workshop will focus on two major challenges faced by libraries today.
- The morning session will address the requisite steps in implementing and
managing change in your library.
- Particular emphasis will be placed on communication strategies for helping staff understand, accept, and embrace change.
- The afternoon session will concentrate on ways in which library
administrators can not only lead change, but also develop and encourage a climate of innovation within their organizations.
- Participants will be asked to assess, relative to their library, the implications of research findings from the Cornell University Library Innovation Implementation Team project (including qualitative data compiled by internal and external peer interviews).
- Organizational and personal characteristics that facilitate or obstruct innovation, and recommendations on fostering innovation and continued excellence in libraries, will also be addressed.
The highly interactive nature of this workshop will be facilitated by the use of large and small group discussion and exercises.
Target Audience: Library administrators and anyone else involved with conceptualizing, implementing, and monitoring change and/or other innovative projects regarding constituent services, human resources, public relations, or other functions.
Learning outcomes:
- Develop communication strategies for encouraging and leading change.
- Evaluate the approach to innovation in your library and identify critical areas for action.
- Motivate people across the organization to identify ideas for new products and services that are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Establish a structure to support and sustain an innovation culture within the organization.
