What's Up on the Web

In keeping with the season of cooler temperatures and numerous holidays that bring us indoors for hearty meals and rich treats, this month’s column is devoted to web sites about food. The library web sites of some Nylink member institutions with culinary programs - Culinary Institute of America http://www2.ciachef.edu/lm/hilton/internet.html, Paul Smith’s College http://www.paulsmiths.edu/go.pl?page=research/ tech_services/culinary.htm l and SUNY Cobleskill http://cobyweb.cobleskill.edu/Library/wguides/cularts.asp - provided good starting places for finding comprehensive directories and content-rich sites. Here's a sampling:

National Turkey Federation http://www.eatturkey.com/: With the NTF web site, figuring out what to do with Thanksgiving leftovers becomes fun with a searchable database of hundreds of recipes. Tips for purchasing, preparing and cooking turkey are also included.

The Cook’s Thesaurus http://www.foodsubs.com/ : This resource could come in handy when confronted with an unusual ingredient in a recipe or when wanting to know what could be substituted for an ingredient.

The Vegetarian Resource Group http://www.vrg.org/index.htm : This nonprofit organization has an educational mission and uses its web site to disseminate information on vegetarian nutrition including articles from the print serial Vegetarian Journal. Recipes are also provided, and the site even includes a guide to restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.

Digital Librarian “Food and Drink” page http://www.digital-librarian.com/food.html : The well-known directory compiled by librarian Margaret Vail Anderson includes an extensive list of links to both popular and unusual sites.

Food and Nutrition Information Center http://www.nalusda.gov/fnic/ and FoodSafety.gov http://www.foodsafety.gov/ : These U.S. government resources can help keep the holidays and new year safe, healthy and happy with information on dietary guidelines, diet and disease, food composition, food labeling, dietary supplements, consumer safety tips, research reports, and much more.
