Columbia Earthscape presents material from top researchers, research institutes, publishers, and educators from around the world, including universities, societies, database compilers, scholarly presses, textbook publishers, government agencies, and news organizations to provide the highest quality and widest range of information. It brings to the Web important works not otherwise available online, including original and collaborative new-media projects and publications. Students, teachers, and librarians will find a dynamic, inquiry-based educational resource, featuring illustrated lectures, animations, video and image banks, exercises and labs, syllabi, and basic textbook readings.
Columbia Earthscape also gives policy makers and professionals a robust, carefully selected and assessed collection of environmental legislation, regional studies, international environmental documents, and white papers. And it offers scientists an educational venue in which to incorporate their research as well as a growing archive of journal articles, journal abstracts, conference literature, full-text monographs and selected chapters, and online data sets. The definition of the term gazetteer, when used in a geographical sense, is a "geographical index or dictionary." The comprehensive gazetteer, such as The Columbia Gazetteer of the World, is an encyclopedia of geographical places and features. In selecting the entries, the overriding goal was to provide maximum coverage of places and features, while achieving a balanced profile of each country. The criteria for including places are population thresholds, reflecting differing national environments; area size; political administrative frameworks; and economic, political, and cultural significance. The Columbia Gazetteer of the World also serves as a unique guide to the ways in which names offer insight into the political, cultural, religious, and aesthetic meanings that people ascribe to particular environments, and in which the values of places change. The dynamism of the world system since World War II is graphically illustrated by changed names for both renewed and pre-existing places. To this welter of old, new, and changed place-names, the Columbia Gazetteer provides a definitive and reliable guide. We plan to launch an extensively redesigned site, which will offer:
- Unique world encyclopedia with 170,000 entries
- Search by geographic coordinates
- Historical US Census Data to the present, other areas of the world to follow
- Sort and organize your search results on screen
- Download search results to Excel or GIS compatible GML
- Columbia Granger's World of Poetry: For over a century, Granger's® has been the definitive source in English for locating a poem in anthologies on library shelves. First published in 1904, The Columbia Granger's® Index to Poetry is now in its 13th edition. In 1999, Granger's went online as The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry. Granger's now provides access to 220,000 full text poems and several new sets of critical context essays. Updates of additional poetry and auxiliary content will continue, as we will launch an extensively rebuilt version of the current site this fall. Look for the following enhancements:
- Improved searching and browsing, enabling easy, intuitive searching of poets and poetry
- Simpler access to the most studied longer works of poetry and all their parts
- Poem Vs. Poem -- Compare two separate poems side-by-side
- Direct searching of biographies, commentaries and critical context, including their content
- Browsable and searchable lists of schools of poetry and eras, ethnicities/nationalities, and language
- Audio readings of the 100 most beloved and studied poems
- On the home screen, Poet's Book of Days calendar, Quote of the Day, and Poetry Trivia
- Columbia International Affairs Online [CIAO]: http://www.ciaonet.org/
Columbia International Affairs Online [CIAO] is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs. Each month, leading academic and research institutions, publishers, government agencies and journals contribute their conference proceedings and works on international affairs to our site. We now have approximately 400,000 pages to browse and search as well as provide timely special features, including a section of original case studies written by leading scholars, (http://www.ciaonet.org/frame/casefrm.html), and a special focus each month, such as December's: "Global Warming and the US Supreme Court." We have begun publishing material from the Economist Intelligence Unit, the research unit for the Economist Group (i.e., the Economist weekly magazine). Information from the Economist is known to be accurate and unbiased, a perfect complement to all CIAO users. We will include basic data and maps for over 200 countries plus quarterly updates to include political and economic background, structure, and outlook. The economic component will also feature a five year summary.
