We will explore initiatives, projects and innovations taking place around the world in the resource sharing arena. All aspects of ILL will be discussed, including patron initiated requesting, unmediated requesting, copyright, electronic document and home delivery, as well as policies and fee management. Alternatives to ILL will be examined - buy it options and how they can be integrated in to inter-library lending workflow and the library workflow as a whole.

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative
Beth Posner, Head of Interlibrary Loan Services, The Graduate Center of the City University of New York
The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative advocates for a revolution in the way that librarians help people access information. Given changing conditions in the information and library worlds, many new possibilities beyond traditional library-to-library interlibrary loan are now possible. The history and work of this group as well as some of the ideas that they are publicizing will be presented.
Two SUNY’s, 1 Desktop: University of Buffalo Pilot With Empire State College
Suzanne Hayes - Empire State College
Carol Lelonek - University of Buffalo Library
Sarah DiThomas - University of Buffalo Library
The University at Buffalo (UB) and Empire State College (ESC) of New York designed a pilot project to test the efficacy of providing UB-owned materials to Empire State College faculty and graduate students. ESC’s goal was to complement their virtual library by providing access to UB’s libraries for ESC faculty and graduate students via ILLiad. Articles are sent electronically via Odyssey and books are sent via UPS directly to the patron’s home or office. If a book is not owned by the University at Buffalo, the item is purchased through Amazon and shipped directly to the patron. The purchased books are added to the University at Buffalo’s collection after being returned by the Empire State College patrons.
This service was accomplished by connecting Empire State College’s ILLiad implementation to the University of Buffalo’s ILLiad client (two SUNY’s, 1 desktop).
