W. David Penniman
Executive Director
W. David Penniman Ph.D. has held tenured academic as well as administrative positions at the University at Buffalo and the University of Tennessee during the past decade. Prior to that he served as president and CEO of the Council on Library and Information Resources (an operating foundation funding research in library automation and other related issues), was a director at AT&T Bell Laboratories in charge of internal information systems including a large automated library network and internal database system, and was Vice President for Research and Planning at OCLC. He has worked as a research scholar in the computer sciences group at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria and as an information scientist and manager at Battelle Memorial Institute.
His professional activities include previous service as Chairman of the Board of Engineering Information, Inc.; president of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and member of the board of advisors for the Getty Information Institute. In addition to membership in ASIS&T he is a senior member of the IEEE and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He has published over 60 articles and book chapters and presented workshops and conference talks throughout the United States and abroad as well as serving as a consultant to senior management involved in library and information service implementation and operation.
